Saturday

View from Bryant Park

Alex usually has to work on the weekends so whenever he manages to score a day off during the weekend, we try to do something special. Sometimes something special means spending the day inside and having a marathon of some sort (e.g. the House of Cards marathon we had a couple of weeks ago). But other times we venture out into our beautiful city and do a bit of exploring, which is something we rarely get the chance to do.

This past Saturday Alex had the day off so we decided to visit the Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market, which we actually had never been to before. All in all we really loved it, aside from the obvious absence of food, which is of course, our favorite thing about the Williamsburg Flea Market. However, the true test to gauge whether or not a flea market is any good is whether or not you find anything worthy of taking home with you. I managed to walk away with an equestrian print silk scarf for $3 (seen here), as well as a vintage Longchamp bag that I was able to get down to $25. Success!

After our flea market experience, we grabbed lunch before strolling through Bryant Park on our way over to Grand Central. While in Grand Central we picked up some jumbo macarons from Eli’s (big surprise) and the hopped on the subway and headed uptown. Once uptown, we popped into Banana Republic where I proceeded to take pictures of Alex as he tried on suits. We then ended our evening with dinner and a movie. It was a really lovely Saturday and I hope to have many more just like it in the future.

A Year of Vintage

I love love love vintage.  I love practically everything and anything vintage. Especially jewelry. And dishware. And brass figurines. And art.  It’s a bit of a problem.  I also maybe enjoy visiting flea markets and thrift stores a little too much.  With that said, here is a collection of the vintage treasures I have accumulated over the past year and I have linked them to their original entries!

The Weekend

This past weekend Alex and I took a much needed break from city life and spent the weekend at my parents’ house, which is about an hour or so north of NYC.  It was an incredibly relaxing, yet productive weekend that included a bit of baking (oatmeal raisin and chocolate chip cookies), a luxurious bubble bath (I miss having a bathtub), two nights of sleeping in a real bed (we have a futon), quality time with animals – especially the boys (our building does not allow pets so I am a bit animal-deprived as of late), some shopping, delicious food from local restaurants, a trip to the flea market, as well as a brief trip to not one, but two horse show events!

A Sunday in Brooklyn

This past Sunday Alex and I headed to Brooklyn to make yet another trip to Ikea (this marked our third trip (first in Brooklyn!) within the past month – gotta love moving!).  Additionally, since we found ourselves in Brooklyn on a Sunday, we decided to visit the Brooklyn Flea in Williamsburg.  I absolutely adore flea markets and could not pass up the chance to visit such a noted one (you can find some of my other flea market related posts here, here, here and here)!  Although we didn’t find anything worth bringing home, we thoroughly enjoyed the food and the view – the flea is definitely worth visiting for the food alone!

A Guide to Martha’s Vineyard

WHERE TO STAY

I’ve stayed in Martha’s Vineyard several times before and my favorite place to stay has been Aquinnah (formally Gay Head), hands down.  It’s picturesque, peaceful, and serene, away from the bustling crowds and loads of traffic.  The only downside is that you have to drive quite a distance to get to the other side of the island in order to visit places like Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs, and Edgartown.

WHERE TO EAT

Among the Flowers Café in Edgartown (we had lunch there, but I hear the breakfast is great too), The Bite in Menemsha, The Black Dog Bakery and Café on State Road in Vineyard Haven.  Also I highly recommend the crab cake sandwich from Dreamcatcher, as well as the California rolls from Faith’s Seafood Shack & Sushi Bar, which are both in Aquinnah.

For a sweet treat – there are tons of places to get ice cream & frozen yogurt; however, by far the best place was Vineyard Scoops in Edgartown.  Also in Edgartown is Scoop Shack, which has ice cream & frozen yogurt, as well as bags, bins and barrels of old-fashioned candy including saltwater taffy!

WHERE TO SHOP

Edgartown is absolutely adorable and by far my favorite place in Martha’s Vineyard for shopping – with its streets lined with charming boutiques, it’s the perfect place to window shop.

I also particularly loved Alley’s General Store in West Tisbury, which is a fun, whimsical old-fashioned general store, packed to the brim with sundries.

Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs (specifically Circuit Ave) have tons of stores to shop as well!

WHAT TO DO

Go to the beach

My favorite beach might be Lobsterville – it was definitely the dogs’ favorite!  Also, Menemsha has a nice, small public beach that’s quite charming.

Visit festivals, flea and farmers markets

The Artisans Festivals located at Historic Grange Hall in West Tisbury all week from 10am-2pm

Featherstone Flea and Fine Arts Market on Tuesdays from 9:30am-2pm at Featherstone Center for the Arts in Oak Bluffs

Chilmark Flea Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9am-2pm at 142 North Road in the field across from the old schoolhouse

The West Tisbury Farmers Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9am-12pm at Grange Hall

Antique Show & Sale at Grange Hall on Fridays from 9am-3pm.

Oak Bluffs Open Market on Sundays from 10am-2pm at Washington Park in Oak Bluffs

Check the calendar for annual events

When we were visiting the Annual Book Sale at Oak Bluffs Library was taking place.

Tour the lighthouses

There are five lighthouses on the island – The West Chop, The East Chop, Edgartown, Gay Head, and Cape Poge

Admire the Aquinnah Cliffs

The spectacular view of these truly breathtaking Clay Cliffs is definitely worth a trip out to Aquinnah!

Visit the Oak Bluffs Campgrounds

A quaint neighborhood within Oak Bluffs consisting of over 300 colorful Carpenter Gothic Victorian cottages with wedding-cake trim, which were mainly built in the 1860s and 1870s.  You can a few pictures of the cottages here!

Ride the Flying Horses Carousel

Located in Oak Bluffs, the Flying Horses Carousel is the oldest operating platform carousel in America and was built in 1876!

Walk around Menemsha

Menemsha is a charming fishing village with a historic harbor, a public beach, as well as a handful of unique shops and a few seafood shacks & restaurants.

A Guide to Cape Cod

THINGS TO DO

Go to the beach

You can find a list/map of all of the Cape Cod beaches here!

Play a round of miniature golf

There are tons of places scattered throughout Cape Cod – we went to Wild Animal Lagoon in West Yarmouth.

 Go shopping

There are plenty of places to shop along Cape Cod, although Chatham’s Main Street might be my favorite area.  There is also a charming used bookstore in Hyannis, Tim’s Books, where we spent almost an hour perusing the shelves.

{Mermaids on Main in Chatham}

{The Sandwich Bazaar – A flea & farmer’s market}

Go thrifting

There are countless thrift shops located on Cape Cod (a fact that I only discovered until this most recent trip), as well as a few flea markets.

{Fisherman’s House Thrift Shop in South Yarmouth}

{The furniture barn at Fisherman’s House}

Visit a museum or the aquarium, or go on a tour

We toured the Cape Cod Potato Chip Factory, as well as went to the JFK Museum – the Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame is located in the same building – and the Woods Hole Science Aquarium.

{Complementary souvenir from the factory tour}

WHERE TO EAT

By far our favorite restaurant that we ate at was Quicks Hole (located in Woods Hole), which has Mexican/Californian/Seafood cuisine – their signature dish is the lobster taco.  If you’re looking for an inexpensive, traditional fish & chips roadside shack, I recommend Captain Frosty’s in Dennis.

For a sweet treat, I suggest going to Sundae School (there are multiple locations, but we went to the one in Harwich Port).

Flea Market Finds

{A vintage, weathered watercolor of Rockefeller Center}

My trip to Stormville Airport Flea Market, which I mentioned last week, was incredibly successful!  Typically, if I’m lucky, I usually walk away from a flea market with a few purchases (three tends to be the maximum); however, this time I was able to walk away with six fantastic finds (seven, actually, if you count the two camels) all for $10 or under!

{A vintage Chinese rice bowl embellished with catfish}

{A Japanese porcelain bowl decorated with elephants in Hong Kong}

{A glass candy dish with a fuchsia rim}

{A French porcelain bowl adorned with tomatoes}

{A set of Hollywood Regency-esque camel figurines}

Stormville Airport Flea Market

The Stormville Airport Antique Show & Flea Market, which is held at a private airport located in the picturesque and historic Hudson Valley, only takes place six times a year and starts with the first show – “Springtime in the Country” –  on April 29th.  The Stormville Flea Market consists of sprawling acres housing over 500 vendors selling a wide variety of bargains and treasures, as well as an extensive variety of food concessions.

Considering “find and visit a new flea market” was #5 on my list of “things to do this spring”, I felt that this past Sunday was the perfect time to do just that, and I must say that the Stormville Flea Market is by far the most impressive flea market I have ever been to!

Flea Market Finds

A few Sundays ago marked my third trip to Elephant’s Trunk Country Flea Market in New Milford, CT (you can find the entry on my second trip here).  My boyfriend and I decided to take advantage of the gorgeous, uncharacteristically warm weather and spend our Sunday morning strolling through an open field, perusing the aisles of vintage treasures.  Like last year, we were able to walk away with three fantastic finds, as well as a delicious snack; thereupon having yet another successful flea market trip!

{A vintage paper mache hot air balloon}

{A painting of Commedia dell’Arte stock characters – Columbine, Pierrot and Harlequin}

{A vintage mirror tray from the 60s}

{that I will be using as a vanity tray for jewelry, perfume, etc.}

{And of course a trip to the flea market would not be complete without cinnamon sugar mini donuts!}
