Gatsby

Gatsby

On Friday my friend Reissa and I went to a screening of The Great Gatsby dressed up as flappers (although she was a much more convincing flapper than I was). Ultimately the hair is everything and in hindsight I should have just bought a wig. But I did buy and wear a drop-waist dress for the occasion, which is not even the least bit kind to someone who has a larger bust like myself. And I had a bit of razzle-dazzle too in the form of Art Deco-ish jewels, glitter nail polish and a sequin clutch.

It was such a fun night, and I had such an amazing time that I think I will dress up for all future trips to the movies!

Horror Film Favorites

In honor of All Hallows’ Eve, I decided to put together a short list consisting of a few of my favorite horror films (in no particular order).  This proved to be incredibly difficult considering there are so many great ones to choose from!

The Shining (1980) Directed by Stanley Kubrick

This is the one film that continues to disturb me to this day.  I once watched it during a snowstorm, which was a bit masochistic to say the least.  And those two little girls? Absolutely terrifying.

Psycho (1960) Directed by Alfred Hitchcock

A true classic.

Suspiria (1977) Directed By Dario Argento

Dario Argento – the master of horror.  This film is disturbingly incredible and worth watching for the art direction alone.

Rosemary’s Baby (1968) Directed by Roman Polanski

Mia Farrow is absolute perfection.

The Thing (1982) Directed by John Carpenter

I could watch this film over and over again.  And I have. The superior special effects and Kurt Russel are just two of the many amazing features of this film.

Fashion in Film: Blow-Up

I have seen Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow-Up (1966) a few times now and I would have to say that it has become of one my favorites.  The film has many elements worth discussing, but for now I want to focus on what I believe to be one of the intrinsic elements of Blow-up: the fashion.

The fashion in Blow-Up is 1960′s mod at its finest.  The film, which is set in London, revolves around a day in the life of noted fashion photographer, Thomas – a character inspired by actual photographer, David Bailey and portrayed by the actor, David Hemmings – and is as a result, filled with gorgeous gangly models sporting smart shifts in saturated colors (usually worn with white tights), or draped in barely-there daring dresses.  It is also worth mentioning Thomas’ impeccably cool ensemble consisting of a blue gingham button-down paired with white jeans, black leather boots and a fitted blazer.

Happy 100th, Gene!

My lovely friend, Jenn, reminded me this morning that today is the anniversary of the birth of our main man, Gene Kelly – he would have turned 100 today.

Without a doubt, my favorite Gene Kelly film is Singin’ in the Rain (1952).  Hands down. No contest. However, I thought that I would share this very brief, yet beautiful moment from An American in Paris (1951) that I believe showcases Gene’s gracefulness and perfectionism.  Simply flawless.

A Jaws Party

For years I have wanted to throw a Jaws-themed party, but it wasn’t until this past Friday that I finally was able to host it.  Jaws is not only my favorite film, but it’s the quintessential summer film, and I figured it would be the perfect concept to build a summer party around.  We had drinks, dinner, as well as an outdoor screening of the film.  I have seen Jaws countless times, and yet I had never seen it projected on a screen until the party so the outdoor screening was extra special.

DRINKS

We made a rum punch (termed “Rum Chum Punch”), which was garnished with bits of Swedish fish and served in Ball jars adorned with colorful shark drink tags and red and white striped paper straws.  There was also Blood Orange sparkling lemonade, Land Shark Lager and Mexican Coke.

FOOD

For hors d’oeuvres there was an assortment of goldfish crackers, as well as selection of sushi rolls, and for dinner we had a make-your-own taco bar, featuring beer battered fish fillets.

SWEET TREATS

For dessert I made shark sugar cookies with royal icing, as well as chocolate cupcakes with blue icing, complete with handmade Great White Shark cupcake toppers.  We also had gummy sharks and shark bites, blue raspberry and cherry ICEEs, and of course, butter popcorn for the screening.

DÉCOR

The look of the event, relying on a primary color palette, was beach party meets 4th of July celebration – the film takes place around the 4th of July, so I felt it would only be appropriate to throw the party around the same time.  We lined our driveway with ‘No Swimming’ signs, which appear in the film, and filled our backyard with candles, tiki torches, string light and paper lanterns.  Additionally, the walls were decorated with homemade flag banners, as well as a handmade movie sign, an official movie poster, and a collection of film stills.

PLAYLIST

The playlist for the party consisted of classic summer tunes including 7 songs from The Beach Boys, “In the Summertime” by Mungo Jerry, “Wipeout” by The Ventures, “Misirlou” and “Let’s Go Trippin’ ” by Dick Dale, “Summertime” by Billy Stewart, “Summertime Blues” by Eddie Cochran, “Surf Rider” by The Lively Rider, “Summer in the City” by The Lovin’ Spoonful, “Louie Louie” by The Kingsmen, as well as “Beyond the Sea” by Bobby Darin and “The Ocean” by Led Zeppelin.

Classic Summer Films

I decided to put together a short list (just in time for the weekend!) – in no particular order – consisting of five of my favorite classic summer films.  Movie marathon anyone?

Rear Window (1954)

As I’ve mentioned before (numerous times, actually), Alfred Hitchcock is my favorite director, and I would have to say that Rear Window – which is set in the summertime – is my favorite film of his.

The Graduate (1967)

Ben (Dustin Hoffman) has just graduated from college and is about to experience what might be his final summer vacation before entering the real world.

Gidget (1959)

Pure fun and the epitome of a 50’s teen beach party movie with the ever so adorable Sandra Dee and a catchy theme song sung by James Darren.

The Seven Year Itch (1955)

Summer in the city – a man sends his family away for their annual summer holiday and meets a beautiful, ditsy blonde living in the apartment above his.

Jaws (1975)

The first-ever summer blockbuster and the QUINTessential summer film.  It also happens to be my absolute favorite.

Fireworks for the Fourth

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!

Independence Day is typically synonymous with fireworks, and whenever I think of fireworks, I think of To Catch a Thief (1955) – particularly the scene between Grace Kelly and Cary Grant that is set in an elegant hotel room, with fireworks going off outside in the distance.  I love this film and have included a video I found, below, that shows a small snippet of this scene.  To see a longer clip, TCM has one on their site, which you can find here!
