Fashion in Film: Blow-Up

I have seen Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow-Up (1966) a few times now and I would have to say that it has become of one my favorites.  The film has many elements worth discussing, but for now I want to focus on what I believe to be one of the intrinsic elements of Blow-up: the fashion.

The fashion in Blow-Up is 1960′s mod at its finest.  The film, which is set in London, revolves around a day in the life of noted fashion photographer, Thomas – a character inspired by actual photographer, David Bailey and portrayed by the actor, David Hemmings – and is as a result, filled with gorgeous gangly models sporting smart shifts in saturated colors (usually worn with white tights), or draped in barely-there daring dresses.  It is also worth mentioning Thomas’ impeccably cool ensemble consisting of a blue gingham button-down paired with white jeans, black leather boots and a fitted blazer.

The First Ladies

The Smithsonian National Museum of American History was the first museum that we visited during our trip to Washington DC, and upon entering, we made a beeline for the The First Ladies exhibition.  The exhibition explores the role of first lady and examines the various ways that individual women have shaped the position and made their own contributions while fulfilling this role – the artifacts include 2 dozen gowns and over 100 other items.  I have included several Instagram photos I took of The First Ladies; however, you can also view the online exhibition HERE!

The 2012 Met Gala

The 2012 Met Costume Institute Gala was last night and I couldn’t resist posting my favorite looks from the evening.  I’ve included my ten favorite looks, as well as an honorable mention.  What did you think of the fashion at the Met Gala?

Side note: I deeply appreciated Anna Wintour’s Prada number – it had a lobster on it!

Cate Blanchett wearing Alexander McQueen

McQueen. Enough said.

Eva Mendes wearing Prada

I love the vintage, 60s vibe of this dress. And the color.

Amber Heard wearing Zac Posen

This color looks amazing on her and I adore a dramatic train.

Rooney Mara wearing Givenchy haute couture by Riccardo Tisci

This is a look that only a few people could pull off and Rooney Mara is one of them.  Extra points because it’s haute couture.

Camilla Belle wearing Ralph Lauren

Very art deco. Love the hair and shade of lipstick – compliments the dress perfectly.

Tory Burch wearing Tory Burch

I am a bit obsessed with this dress and I love the green earrings with it.

Emma Roberts wearing Escada

Love this color, as well as the sweetheart neckline.

Jessica Paré wearing L’Wren Scott

Simple silhouette, but how can you go wrong with head to toe gold sequins?

Caroline Trentini wearing custom Theyskens Theory by Olivier Theyskens

This dress looks like it’s vintage with it’s chic, elegant silhouette and yet it’s denim! Bonus points!

Amy Adams wearing Giambattista Valli Haute Couture

My favorite white dress of the night. And it’s haute couture.

Honorable Mention

Amy Poehler wearing Fotini

I love love love her. And I love her in this dress.  Peplum and feathers? Yes, please!

Swan Dive or Cannonball?

Kate Spade recently launched an interactive campaign video –  swan dive or cannonball – celebrating their debut swim collection by malia mills.  On their website you can find the interactive video, which allows you to pick the ways you want the “splashy story” to unfold.  Above, is the video that has my favorite scenario – French pop and funk music with a swan dive finish!  Below, is the other scenario that has flamenco and rock music with a cannonball finish.  Which is your favorite?
